The book The Name Of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss is a great read!  The descriptive detail in which the author wrote this fascinating tale was invigorating!  I was immediately sucked into the magical world of the main character, Kvothe.  Kvothe was a part of a troupe with his family.  They were a traveling troupe, the best in the whole country in fact.  With Kvothe's family troupe, traveled a man that was very well taught an d knowledgeable in the arts of sorcery and in all things magical.  Kvothe was engrossed by this man and his teachings and spent a great deal of time with him.  Life was rough and unfair to him until one day he is allowed into the college of magic and his life began to change.

Kids in high school or middle school would probably enjoy this book because of its plot and setting of the story.
